Oh a whim…

I wanted to get a jump-start on my summer. So, to all my friends in the Ohio area, is anyone out there interested in putting on your walking/running shoes and doing a 1/2 marathon or a 5K with me?

All the sudden yesterday, as I probably should have been doing something else, I had the sudden desire to want to start training to complete a 1/2 marathon. I have no idea where that came from, but I figured there is no better time than now!! It may not be totally feasible for you to run the entire thing just yet, but just getting out there and even walking a 5k or jogging a 1/2 would be awesome!! So I did a search and lucky for me Columbus is hosting a Commit to be fit 5K/half-marathon in 5 weeks; on Saturday May 2nd at 8 am.  So if you are interested you can register go to this website and if you register by the end of the month it is only $60. I am planning on running and would love for you to join me. I am not ready yet but will be following a training schedule. There are a bunch out there but here is an example of a 6-week one that I thought I could adapt to my schedule.

Together we can be part of the solution instead of part of the problem!! How's that for a pep talk! E-mail me or leave a comment and I'll see you race day. Love to see you there!

Spring is here…

And I couldn't be happier…all except that with the coming of April, comes………April showers, that's right.
Rain. And it's in the forecast all week and weekend.
Not that I don't love the rain it is just a tease when the weather is finally warm enough to go outside and play but now it is raining. But hey, I'll take it.

I can't wait to get my hands on our yard and garden!! In fact this last weekend Cory took the boys to a car show and Brooklyn and I went and wandered around Old Time Pottery and Lowes. Notice I said wandering. It was so nice to not have to rein the boys in as their curious little hands want to run and touch everything. I bought some pots and soil and some seeds to get a jump start on our vegetable garden. When I got home Briggs and I painted my herb pots and then planted a bunch of seeds. It was a lot of fun. I can't help getting a little bounce in my step when the air is warm and the sun is shining. I always seem to fit more into my day on sunny days…why is that?

My little helper

Briggs was so sad that we didn't have more pots because he wanted to do one with circles like mine.

It was a little chilly to do the planting outside so we did it indoors.  Brooklyn played while we planted.

Anyway…The kids and I have been enjoying the days by taking walks (while Briggs rides his bike) and looking at all the trees which have little green buds appearing all over the place. Briggs gets so excited to show me a new tree that he sees coming to life. It has been fun. The other day we had been out for a while and Briggs stopped and got off his bike. He looked back at me and said, "when I ride my bike for a long time my pants get smashed in my bum."
Hilarious! I laughed so hard and called Cory to tell him what Briggs had just said. Funny boy.

We have been riding bikes as a family as well. A few weeks back Cory and I bought Briggs an extension bike that has one wheel and hooks onto my bike (basically I pull him from behind like a tandom bike) and he loves it. That entire day that we bought it he was giddy with excitement to wear his new helmet and ride his bike. Later that day as we were riding he said to me “This has been a fun day. (then he proceeded with) I don’t like dark clouds, I like white fluffy clouds and sunshine. I like lots of sunshine. It seems like we have a lot of dark clouds here.” It was so cute. I can tell that he and I are going to have a lot of good conversations riding our bikes together.

Notice Briggs new helmet…now that is a proud boy!

Since I'm sharing, this was something cute that Briggs said to me the other day that really touched me. It seemed I had been getting after him all day long and I was feeling quite frustrated with him and Ethan goofing off, fighting, and not listening (for those who know Briggs he is pretty good most of the time) anyway after several times of telling to him sit at the table and eat his food I went to sit down and nurse Brooklyn. I had a headache and I leaned my head back on the back of the chair and closed my eyes. A few minutes passed and he said to me, "mom?…I like you so much." boy, those kids sure know how to soften a hardened heart. Then he proceeded to say “I love everyone so much. I love our neighbors, our friends, and our family so much.” What a sweet little boy!

He is a tender-hearted little boy, who loves to play outside with friends, ride bikes, eat doughnuts (which we don't get that often), coloring (which he is great at), watching word world, learning to read, and has informed me that he likes all colors but red because it is not his favorite.

And our little Ethan. What a fun little boy. Just a little update. He is officially potty-trained and boy has this surprised me. He has far surpassed any expectation that Cory or I could have imagined. The boy has amazing control!! Having said that Cory made a good observation about Ethan…he is our little free-spirited little boy. That he is most happy when he is free. Free of being held, free of shoes outside, free from time-out, free to dance and be silly…you get the picture.  It can definitely be both fun and challenging learning a whole new child, but definitely well worth it:).
The other day the boys were playing on our neighbors swing set and there was a little driving wheel that he was playing with. I asked him where he was going and he said with a shrug, "I dunno…the temple." In fact everytime I ask him where he is going he replies with, "to the temple."  He loves his race cars, and playing good guy and bad guy (by the way I have no idea where he picked this up from) but he does the voices and everything. He likes to work out with me and be where I am. He loves Brooklyn and loves to make her laugh (which she usually does quite freely with him). The other day we were getting ready for church and he said to me: "Where are we going?" I said, "church" and he got so excited and said, "YEA! I LOVE CHURCH!" We sure love our little blue-eyed boy!

Brooklyn is our squishy, yummy little girl who is just about 8 months now; boy does time fly. She is such a joy. She loves to eat rice, bread, cheerios, any food really. Taking baths, rolling around on the floor, lotion bottles, her brothers, nursing, being dramatic at times, smiling for the camera (which she sees a lot), going on walks, having daddy hold her up in the air balancing on her feet, grabbing at everything in front of her, being held upside down, laughing and just being a sweet little girl. She has 2 teeth now and is trying to push herself forward using her toes. She sure is growing and getting a strong and fun personality. It's hard to remember what life was like before we had our little Brooklyn; she is a fun little girl and adored by the entire family! Lucky girl.

Luck o' the Irish

Happy St. Patty's Day!!
(aka, just another great reason for me to take some cute photos of the kids)

I chose a slideshow so I could include more photos for the grandparents.  I think you can get a good feel for how Brooklyn was mostly willing then turned not so cooperative when the boys turned up, and the boys just being boys and being oh, so silly.  Sure love them!

Picture update

So I've captured a little bit of what goes on around here. So here are a few of Cory and my favorite moments with the kids the past few weeks…

Brooklyn…

Cory Balancing brooklyn.  She loves it and she has great balance.  Briggs thinks that she looks like a trophy being held up in the air like his soccer trophy he got last year.

Love the cankles…

Bad picture but I love those squeezable legs.  You would too :)

Kisses from daddy…she likes it best when he is clean-shaven.  I love this little hat.

Briggs one sunday

Tackling Ethan

Morning Bed-head.  Ethan was having a rough morning and Briggs offered to cuddle with Ethan; he is a sweet brother.

So I am bound and determined to have little boys who know how to be self-sufficient and know how to clean. We have really been working on making beds and tidying up their room and bathroom in the morning before any cartoons or "fun" things. We had a particularly nice day and I told them that if they made their beds we would go on a walk. Well, I reminded them several times but stopped asking as I wanted to see if they would do it (they were excited about going on a walk) but no such luck.

I explained to them why we didn't get to go on a walk and that I would like them to make their beds every morning first thing. So it was to my pleasant surprise that the next morning I was downstairs getting breakfast for Ethan when I heard some noise upstairs. I came up to see what was going on and I walked into the boys room and Briggs had the biggest smile on his face…he had made his bed!! I was so proud of him!! I praised him and gave him tons of loves. He was picking up legos when I walked in and was tidying up. We tidied up together. What a great little boy and what a great moment for me as a mom. The next two days he made his bed first thing and has done it since.  I guess persistence pays off.

Briggs Bed…

It takes a bit more coaxing with Ethan but here is him putting his animals to sleep after making his bed.

All snug as a bug…

Brooklyn was laying on her back and is actually quite quick at rolling over, and the moment she did Ethan would pull her back onto her back.  This happened several times before she had had enough.  It was pretty funny.

In true Ethan fashion.  He discovered the bike helmets when Cory was cleaning the garage and insisted on wearing it all day.  He was helping me here in this picture!  I love it!

Potty training

This may very well just be a TMI-post but for those of you who want to know what has been going down in the Hansen household here you go. Cory is out of town and I seem to always take on a big project while he is gone. This week…potty-training. I am ready for Ethan to be out of diapers and he is ready to wear big-boy underwear. He chose lightning McQueen and Transformers (the only two options at the store). So to report, I have made it through the first two days potty training!! I've kept my cool and I still have a smile on my face; I actually haven't dreaded it like I did with my first. I have to say that so far it has been pretty good. Yesterday he had 5 (peeing) accidents and screamed when he did because he hated the pee running down his leg; I guess I would too.  However he did sit for me every 20-25 minutes on the toilet quite willingly but never went potty in the toilet. He was also dry during his naps.

Today he was not so willing to sit for me at planned intervals but was DRY all day long (and for nap) and went pee twice in the potty.  The first he actually came up to me and told me he wanted to go potty and the first thing that went through my mind was "he's already gone" but to my pleasant surprise he was dry. I was so proud of him and we all celebrated!!  Knock-on-wood, but lets hope that he keeps going strong.  What a good little boy.

(the above photo was taken last month when I tried but realized I wasn't quite ready; apparently he was…go figure. )
